I enjoyed your thoughtful article but you avoided using one phrase which would encompass the modern day socialism you champion: welfare capitalism. There are 50 shades of political ideology and the kind of social intervention programs and economic engineering you advocate could take on a number of different labels, including Square-Deal-,Great-Society- , New-Deal-, Great- Frontier-progressive legislation to address social ills. The labels are in a sense damaging because they alienate those without historical perspective from the healthy public policy those measures, if enacted, would have. Your piece did outline a constructive policy approach for the future.
